Plain language. No corporate jargon. Ironic, given the subject matter.

Cookies are small text files stored in your browser when you visit a website. They let the site remember things — your preferences, your session, whether you have already seen the cookie banner.
Cookies are not programs. They cannot carry viruses and cannot access anything else on your device.
Under EU law (the ePrivacy Directive and GDPR), websites must ask for your permission before placing any cookie that is not strictly necessary for the site to function.
We use two categories of cookies. Here is the full picture — no hidden entries.
Every cookie set by this site and its third-party services, listed in full:
| Cookie name | Set by | Purpose | Duration | Category |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| cookieyes-consent | Cookiebot / CookieYes | Stores your cookie consent choice so the banner does not appear on every visit | 1 year | Necessary |
| _carrd_session | Carrd (our website host) | Keeps your browsing session active while you are on the site | Session (deleted when you close the browser) | Necessary |
| substack_* | Substack | Enables the newsletter subscription embed to function correctly | Session / up to 1 year depending on cookie | Necessary |
| _ga | Google Analytics (Google LLC) | Distinguishes unique visitors. Stores an anonymised, randomly generated ID — no personal information is stored in this cookie. | 2 years | Analytics — consent required |
| _ga_[ID] | Google Analytics (Google LLC) | Maintains session state for Google Analytics 4 (GA4) | 2 years | Analytics — consent required |
| _gid | Google Analytics (Google LLC) | Distinguishes users across sessions. Anonymised. | 24 hours | Analytics — consent required |
We added Google Analytics to this site in early 2026 to understand, in broad terms, how many people visit and which content is most useful. We are transparent about this.
What Google Analytics does not do here: build personal profiles, track you across other websites, target you with ads, or connect your behaviour to your identity.
What it does: counts anonymised page views, sessions, and general geographic regions (country level). We have disabled all advertising and remarketing features inside our Google Analytics account.
Google Analytics cookies are only placed after you click "Accept all" on the cookie banner. If you click "Necessary only", no analytics cookies are set and no data is sent to Google.
You can opt out at any time via the Cookie settings link in the footer. Google Privacy Policy →
This table is reviewed and updated whenever we add or remove a service from the site.
On your first visit, a cookie banner appears at the bottom of the page. Here is what each option means:
There is no "by continuing to browse you agree" language here. Consent is explicit, informed, and specific — as required by GDPR and the EU ePrivacy Directive. You can change your mind at any time.
Click the "Cookie settings" link in the footer of any page to reopen the consent panel and update your preferences.
You can also delete or block cookies directly in your browser settings. Note that blocking strictly necessary cookies may break some site functionality.
You can also install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, which prevents Google Analytics from collecting data across all websites, not just ours.
For any questions about cookies or this policy, email confide@burnedoutdiaries.com with the subject line "Cookie query". We respond within 30 days.
